My Favorite Summer Photo for Back to School

It’s Back-to-School season. The summer break is winding down and students and teachers are heading back to the classroom. To ease back into learning mode, spend some time reminiscing on the magic of the summer season. August 19 is World Photography Day. The 2025 theme is My Favorite Photo. For back to school, have students bring in their favorite photo that was taken over the summer break. Students will then describe why the photo is so special to them. If students don’t have a photo, find one from a previous summer.

1. Have each student bring in their favorite photo taken during the summer. Students can go back to previous summers as well.

2. Students will display their photo for the class.

3. Students will describe their photo, when and where it was taken, and why it is so special to them.

4. Optional activities.
a) Have students write a descriptive essay describing the events that took place in the photo.
b) Have students exchange photos and write a fictional story surrounding the events in the photo.
c) Have students get into pairs and interview each other about the events taking place in the photo.

Ease back into learning with a fun activity to get the creative juices flowing.
