Build Review Into Real Instruction

Keep group lessons short and direct. Model the skill, guide students through a few examples, and provide independent practice that allows you to see whether the support worked. Students who demonstrate understanding can return to grade-level tasks, while those who need more time can receive another brief lesson using a different example or format.
For some classes, stations or independent learning tasks make this manageable. One group can work with the teacher while others complete meaningful practice, read, respond to a prompt, or use a digital activity. The key is preparation: independent tasks must be clear enough that students can complete them without constant interruption.

Feedback should be specific and actionable. “Review this” is less useful than “Check whether your answer matches the operation in the problem” or “Add evidence from the second paragraph to support your idea.” When students know what to revise, they can make progress without waiting for another full lesson.
Plan for Different Starting Points
Some students will need review, while others are ready for enrichment. Both needs deserve attention. Students who demonstrate mastery can apply skills in a new context, complete a more challenging text-dependent task, investigate an extension question, or create a product that requires deeper reasoning. Enrichment is not simply more of the same work.
At the same time, intensive support should preserve access to grade-level learning whenever possible. A student may need targeted practice with decoding, computation, or vocabulary while still participating in a class discussion, investigation, or shared reading experience. It depends on the skill gap and the demands of the task, but support should help students enter the learning rather than separate them from it.
A strong back-to-school plan is not measured by how much review you complete. It is measured by whether students can begin new learning with the tools, routines, and confidence to succeed. Start small, use the evidence in front of you, and make each early lesson do double duty: strengthen foundations while moving the class forward.
