This book is intended for children in first and second grade and those who need extra practice with these basic skills.
Character is a personal quality that helps a person get along with others and become a productive citizen. Children acquire good character by observation and imitation of parents, relatives, and friends, as well as through formal instruction at school, in religious settings, and in other groups. The series Social Skills Simplified: Being the Best Me, Grade 1-2 from Essential Learning Products offers children an opportunity to learn and practice some very essential skills of good character. These skills help children develop a sense of respect and responsibility toward others. In the process children build self-esteem and feel confident in social situations. This practice book offers children the opportunity to work individually and at their own pace. A skill is presented, and then followed by exercises allowing children to practice immediately what they have learned. An Answer Page with appropriate responses to the activities is provided at the back of this book. After students complete a page, immediately review the answers with them to provide feedback when it is most meaningful. It will be helpful if children and adults work together on the book. However, the extensive use of pictures makes it easy for children to understand the content; plus, children can choose to color in these pictures as an extension activity. To be most effective, it’s important that an adult discuss and reinforce the character-building skills. The skills featured in this book fall into three categories: respect and responsibility, citizenship, manners.
