About the Novel:
American Born Chinese highlights the struggle to reconcile cultural identity and self-acceptance while facing pressures to assimilate. This graphic novel brings together three stories that explore identity, transformation and belonging. The first follows the legendary Monkey King, a powerful but proud figure who wants to be accepted by the gods of heaven. Because he is judged for being a monkey, he tries to prove his worth and rise above his origins. The second story focuses on Jin Wang, the American-born son of Chinese immigrants, who struggles to fit in at school while feeling pressure to distance himself from his cultural background. The third story follows Danny, a typical American teenager whose life is disrupted by his cousin Chin-Kee, a character built on exaggerated stereotypes. Although the stories seem separate at first, they all show characters facing insecurity and stereotypes. Ultimately, the novel shows that true acceptance comes from embracing who you really are.
