About the Novel:
Where the Red Fern Grows tells the heartwarming tale of a young boy and his two little hunting hounds. Billy wants two dogs to hunt raccoons along his family’s property in the Ozarks. Not just any dogs, but redbone coon hounds. The problem is, his father can’t afford dogs like that. Billy decides to take it on himself and save the money he needs. It takes two years, but Billy finally has enough for his dogs. When they arrive, Billy is overwhelmed and sets about training them. Soon, Billy and his dogs become proficient hunters—good enough to enter a county-wide championship. Throughout this time with his dogs, Billy learns many hardships. He faces guilt, grief and loss, as well as love and laughter. The story culminates into a final lesson of acceptance and moving on as he deals with the inevitable loss of his best friends.
