Give students an early reading boost and tap into the power of rimes.
Teachers have found that they can expand students' word power immensely by introducing them to the concept of onsets and rimes. Onsets are single consonants, blends, and digraphs that begin words or syllables. Rimes are the vowel and whatever follows it in a syllable. Rimes tend to be spelled and pronounced the same in most words in which they are found. Thus, knowing the most common rimes gives students control over hundreds of words in the English language. Students will practice letter/sound recognition while building, reading, and writing hundreds of words. They will add selected onset tiles (consonants, blends, and digraphs) to common rimes, such as at and en, and blend them together. Watch them discover the huge number of words they can make. With the ake rime alone, they can build 14 words. Use the 70 word-building lessons for individual, whole class, or small group instruction.
