About the Novel:
The Catcher in the Rye follows its protagonist as he navigates New York City in an attempt to avoid his life struggles. Holden Caulfield is a troubled teen. He continues to flunk out of boarding schools, disappointing the people around him. This latest time comes just days before he’s to return home for the holidays. After a fight with his roommate, Holden decides to leave the boarding school early. Not wanting to go home, Holden decides to stay in a hotel in New York City. He then spends a few days traveling around the city, sharing his cynical views and getting into trouble. Eventually, Holden runs out of money and is forced to return home. However, he plans to run away and start a new life; but first, he needs to say goodbye to his little sister. With all his talk and planning, Holden ultimately does what he always does—go home and follow his parents’ plans. The Catcher in the Rye is a story that highlights teenage angst and the struggles the youth experience when faced with life choices.
