  • Discover the loneliness that comes with a solitary and independent life.

The quizzes and activity pages make this resource accessible for all students. Students choose their own animal to become their faithful companion, much like Frightful is to Sam. Elaborate on Sam's realization that he is low in vitamin C by researching other vitamins and explaining what they provide to the human body. Test comprehension with multiple choice questions that ask about how Sam spends Christmas on the mountain. Predict how long it will be before Sam sees his father again. Identify the different relationships Sam makes with both animals and other people during his time in the Catskill Mountains. Aligned to your State Standards and written to Bloom's Taxonomy, our worksheets incorporate a variety of scaffolding strategies along with additional crossword, word search, comprehension quiz and answer key.

    About the Novel:
My Side of the Mountain follows one boy's journey into the wilderness and the most unlikely realization he finds there. Sam Gribley is an adolescent boy who lives in a small New York City apartment with eight brothers and sisters. He hates feeling trapped and dreams of living in the wide open space that only the wilderness can provide. He decides then to run away to his grandfather's abandoned farm in the Catskill Mountains. On the way, Sam recounts how he survives a snowstorm and befriends a falcon and weasel. He learns many skills from people he meets on his journey that will help him to survive his independent lifestyle. However, Sam finds his solitude more lonesome than he thought, and soon yearns for human interaction. This coming-of-age story follows the mental and physical growth of a young boy as he discovers who he really is.

Questions and vocabulary not lining up with the sections for chapter review

I have used these Literature kits through out the year and have loved them. I wanted to write a review though to let someone know that their last print on this particular book is messed up. How so, you might ask? The curriculum is all mixed up somehow their are questions or vocabulary in each section review that are for a upcoming chapter. This is not in the before you read section. Those questions are normally predictions. The questions and vocab I am talking about are expecting you to answer questions correctly but aren't given for another couple chapters. Ex.- We had questions about a red fox in section Thirteen and Fourteen but we don't here anything about the red fox until Chapter 16. Hopefully someone sees this who can fix it for the next print.
    Thank you!

Hello Jolene, and thank you so much for reaching out with your feedback. In response to your questions about vocabulary not lining up, I found that this was not the case. In your example, our Chapters 13 to 14 section, the True or False question states 'Sam describes the red fox’s cry as very crow-like.' with the answer as False. The section of the novel in which this question refers to is from Chapter 14, entitled 'We All Learn About Halloween.' The passage is as follows (condensed): An eerie yelp behind the boulder announced that the red fox of the meadow was nearing… Every now and then he would cry—a wavery owllike cry.
I hope this clears things up. Thank you.

This is a great resource for a book that can become a little tedious.
